As a fund development company for purpose-driven, mission-minded, nonprofit organizations dedicated to changing the world, my mission is to ensure that those who want to change the world have the funding and resources to do so. I am a Nonprofit Consultant, Trainer, Coach, Speaker teaching nonprofit social impact enterprises how to achieve funding sustainability so that instead of chasing down nickels and dimes, they can finally stop begging and get the funding they deserve.
As a Strategic Fund Development consultant, I work exclusively with nonprofit leaders, board members and staff who are passionate about their cause but may be challenged with getting the money to make their vision a fully funded reality.
So how did I get into this work?...glad you asked! 😊
My entire professional career has been in nonprofit sector…at least for the last 25 years anyway! I love being in the community working directly with people to help empower and transform their lives. There’s an immediate gratification of looking into the eyes of someone whose life has been forever changed, that sets my soul on fire!
While working as a corporate trainer in Johannesburg South Africa in the areas of Diversity, Affirmative Action, Employment Equity, Gender Equity, Change Management and Organizational Transformation, I began learning about the work that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was conducting on the continent. Being from Seattle, I figured when I go back home, I would love to work for this Foundation and that is exactly what happened.
Unfortunately, with an average STARTING salary hovering between $65,000 - $85,0000 annually, hiring a Development Director (DD) is out of reach for most small and emerging nonprofits. So, what’s the alternative? You can try to disperse the duties among the Executive Director, Board members and fundraising committee…if one exists, but ultimately, the additional responsibilities will eclipse the primary functions of those roles. This is when tapping into the expertise of a knowledgeable Fund Development consultant – like me – can prove to be invaluable!
I work with you to engineer and implement a funding strategy; devise business systems and methodologies to expand and preserve the donor base; and facilitate Board, staff and volunteer fund development training.
I am most passionate about empowering the powerless and giving voice to the voiceless. Working in Fund Development means, everyday I get to connect with my passion and my purpose. As a grant maker I would often get approached by small community nonprofits wanting to know how to get funding for their work since they were out of scope with the priorities of the Foundation. I realized that there was a niche opportunity for me to offer a “peek behind the curtain” into the world of philanthropy; Where is the money? How do you qualify? Who gets funded and why? Once again I was connected to my passion of empowering communities at a grass-roots level.
I started consulting as a “side-hustle” while I was still working as a full-time grant-maker. Ultimately, my side-gig began to outgrow my full-time gig so when downsizing the department meant my position was on the chopping block - I leaped at the chance to work in consulting, full-time!
It’s been a thrilling ride ever since! Thanks to technology, I work with nonprofit, NGO, and social impact organizations across the globe as a Fund Development Consultant. In an ideal world, every nonprofit would have a Development Director (DD) on staff, responsible for spearheading all your major gift programs, donor acquisition and funding campaigns.
